Nemaco Technology's Reference Section for 304 & 316 Stainless Steel
Electrical Enclosures, Boxes & Cabinets with Industrial Applications

Welcome to Nemaco Technology's stainless steel enclosure section that provides basic technical information for 304 & 316 stainless steel enclosures. This is a basic summary of the stainless steel enclosures available and types of NEMA ratings for each enclosure if applicable. In the other specialized technical reference sections the enclosures and products are separated into catagories and NEMA classifications. Nemaco provides some samples of the Stainless Steel enclosures in the the other sections. Also, the other technical sections provide many internal and external photos of the stainless steel enclosures. Of course you can call Nemaco for additional information for any of Nemaco's Tigerbox stainless steel products or any of the electrical enclosures, cabinets or boxes.

Enjoy the material that we have prepared for you, and if you have any questions, please call Nemaco by telephone or complete our contact form.

Types of Steel Enclosures

Hinged Stainless Steel Enclosures - Wall Mount NEMA 4X NEMA 4X Enclosure

The most common stainless steel enclosures are the NEMA 4X enclosures that are used in washdown sanititary applications for the food and beverage industry. The food and beverage industry use 304 & 316 stainless junction & pull boxes for wiring connections and for PLC electronics. Other common uses for NEMA 4X enclosures for oil & gas chemical refineries, offshore drilling rigs and offshore production platforms. The offshore drilling rigs and offshore productions platform use only 316 stainless enclosures, cabinets and junction & pull boxes for power & controls. Since 316 stainless steel has more of the chrome element in the (carbon steel) metallurgy than 304 stainless steel therefore 316 has more corrosion resistance to saltwater and other corrosive liquids. The offshore drilling rigs need to use 316 stainless steel for extra corrosion protection. Sometimes the 316 stainless steel enclosures are passivated for additional corrosion protection. The mining industry will sometimes use 304 stainless steel enclosures in the mine shafts and tunnels for safety electronics.

The Tigerbox™ stainless steel wall-mounted 304 NEMA 4X enclosures can be used indoors or outdoors to provide electrical (instruments, power transformers, junction wiring) or mechanical systems (pneumatic instruments and valves) protection against dust, dirt, oil and water. These stainless steel enclosures are suitable for applications in petrochemical refineries, dairies on country roads, beer micro-breweries, sanitary food processing plants and any washdown environments where water and cleaning solutions are used everyday for maintenance or sanitation. Also, the 316 stainless enclosures can be used in areas where severe corrosion problems exist from saltwater or acids. Most offshore enclosure are made of 316 stainless steel and passivated. Construction.

Nemaco offers Tigerbox™ 4X Enclosures for Speciality Applications

The Tigerbox™ stainless steel enclosures are available in Type 304 and type 316 stainless steel with a brushed finish. The Tigerbox™ enclosures are unique since the enclosure covers have extra folded edges to provide extra environmental seal protection. The environmental sealing surface is the parts that keeps out dust and resists water. Therefore, the Tigerbox™ 4x Enclosures provide additional protection for the environmental seals.

The Tigerbox™ NEMA 4X enclosure seams are continuously welded ground to a smooth finish. The Tigerbox™ are available with interior studs for (optional) mounting sub-panels. And (optional) grounding studs are provided on the inside of the box and door. The Tigerbox™ NEMA 4X cover is sealed with a neoprene gasket and the cover is attached to the enclosure with a continuous stainless steel piano hinge on one side and stainless steel JIC door clamping hardware on three sides. Most enclosure do not have knock-outs or holes in the cover or enclosure base. But Nemaco can provide customized Tigerbox™ enclosures for customers. Also, heavy duty wall mounting back brackets are welded on the top and bottom outside. Aluminum and Powder coated (14 ga cold rolled steel) sub-panels are available. Also, aluminum and stainless sub-panels are available as an option. Waterproof computers, IPC's and industrial computer enclosures for food processing companies and general manufactuing companies.

Stainless Steel Computer Enclosures for Sanitary Washdown

In many processing plants, there is a need for waterproof computers for data entry or process displays. Nemaco offer Tigerbox™ stainless enclosures washdown applications. IPC's and industrial computer enclosures for food processing companies and general manufactuing companies.

Nemaco offers Tigerbox™ Enclosures and Custom Applications

Nemaco offers Tigerbox™ 3, 3R, 4X, 6p enclosures that are sometimes custom fabricated from high tech stainless steel alloys instead of plain carbon steel. There are many special applications that customers need high corrosion resistance metal to protect from chemicals and salt water corrosion. Probably the Chemical, processing and oil & gas industries are the most demanding industries that use stainless steels are the chemical, processing and oil & gas industries have created a large market for stainless tanks, pipes, pumps and valves as well. One of the first major success stories for 304 stainless steel was the storage of dilute nitric acid as it could be used in thinner sections and was more robust than other materials. Special grades of stainless have been developed to have greater corrosion resistance at a broad range of different temperatures. The Nemaco Tigerbox™ stainless steel enclosures are used in desalination plants, sewage plants, offshore oilrigs, harbour supports and and other ships applications. Stainless Steel - Metal Grades for FYI

The high corrosion resistance and the excellent mechanical properties combination of "duplex stainless steels" can be explained by their chemical composition and balanced ('duplex') microstructure of approximately equivalent volume fractions of ferrite and austenite. Firstly, the chemical composition based on high contents of Cr and Mo, improves intergranular and pitting corrosion resistance, respectively. Moreover, additions of nitrogen can promote structural hardening by interstitial solid solution mechanism, which increases the good properties of the yield strength and ultimate strength values without impairing toughness. Secondly, the two-phase microstructure guarantees higher resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking in comparison with conventional stainless steels.

The duplex stainless steels comprise a family of grades with a range in corrosion performance depending on their alloy content. Modern duplex stainless steels are often addressed in four groups:

Lean duplex, such as 2304 (S32304), which contain little or no deliberate Mo addition; 2205 (S32205), the workhorse grade accounting for more than 80% of duplex use; 25 Cr duplex, such as 255 (S32550) and S31260; Superduplex, with 25-26 Cr and increased Mo and N, such as 2507 (S32750). The table lists the duplex stainless steels covered in ASTM specifications for plate, sheet, and bar products. Although few of the duplex grades are patented, many of these grades are closely associated with particular steel producers as proprietary developments. This situation is often reflected in the naming of the grades. Only one duplex stainless steel has an AISI designation, Type 329, a first generation duplex stainless steel without intentional nitrogen addition. Many of the grades have become commonly known by a number that reflects their typical chromium and nickel contents, e.g., 2205 with 22% Cr and 5% Ni. These composition-based names, used by many producers, have recently been added to A 240 and are being added to the ASTM specifications for other product forms. Trademarks of individual producers are not permitted in the ASTM specifications. All grades in the ASTM specifications are all listed by their designations in the Unified Numbering System (UNS). It is important to reference the UNS number when ordering to the standard specifications in order to get the desired grade.
